2021 - Felix Landry Yuan began his PhD at HKU working with Prof. Masami Hasegawa (Toho University) on the lizards of the Izu Islands. Masami has studied predator-prey dynamics of skinks and lizards across the islands for decades. And Felix was eager to study thermal biology aspects of these species interactions - Masami was generous and eager to collaborate. In 2017 Masami visited the lab at HKU (see photo) and in 2019 Tim and Felix visited Masami during a field course on Sado Island. Felix spent multiple field seasons on the Izus with Masami. He raced skinks down a race track and measured thermal performance at variable body temperatures. Masami had also collected similar data for snakes. Body temperature data were also collected by Masami and his team between 1981 to 2019. Remarkably, on islands where the snake predator was present, the lizards' foraging body temperatures were approximately 3C higher than lizards where there were no snakes. Additionally, we found that climatic warming over that period coincided with an increase in lizard body temperature by over 1C. And finally, Shun Ito conducted an analysis demonstrating that snakes resulted in a selection for longer hind leg length on islands where there are snakes present. A couple things amaze me about this paper. First and foremost, the fact that Masami collected body temperature of the lizards in the 1980s is incredible. And we were extremely fortunate for his foresight here. In fact, he wasn't thinking about climate change when he collected that data. He was just curious. But that curiosity is so fundamental to everything we do in ecology and conservation science. The second thing that still surprises me is just how strong the effects were. We initially hypothesized that we might see some effects of climate and predators on skink body temperatures... but none of us really expected to see such strong effects. Because of the complexity of predator-prey interactions and underlying thermal biology effects for multiple ectotherms, we don't know how future climate change might affect these species. It might help the skinks, but it also might give a "leg up" to the snake. Felix's research highlights the complexity of future species interactions like this in a warming world. For her thesis she wanted to do a study on butterflies and butterfly gardens. The topic has recently become a popular one in Hong Kong and there is considerable interest in improving urban habitats for biodiversity and butterflies in particular. Fiona and I discussed sampling strategies and ways to get good butterfly data. One of the things that has interested me about Hong Kong urban butterflies is that there are a lot of them... but whether they're using resources in urban areas or just passing through still remains a largely open question. Toby Tsang has also long-studied this topic so he soon too got involved in the study. Fiona put a lot of time into intensively sampling ten butterfly gardens across Hong Kong spanning urban and peri-urban sites. Importantly, she collected both diversity and behavioral data. And then Toby used his statistical wizardry to put all the data together and make sense of it all. We found that diversity correlated with surrounding NDVI... but that the behavioral diversity metric that also correlated with NDVI was "flying across". This is an indication that the higher diversity in those gardens has less to do with the garden itself but rather the surrounding landscape and butterflies passing through the gardens. We also found that "nectaring diversity" correlated with the floral abundance. Some butterflies do then appear to be using floral resources. The work highlighted the importance of considering behavior and presents a useful way for untangling these processes by breaking down diversity into behavioral components. When I was a postdoc at UCLA in 2010-2011 I got involved in a proposal to study climate change adaptation in Central Africa. We proposed a project to study adaptation and plasticity in Bicyclus dorothea in Cameroon using a common garden experimental design. Little did we know at the time how difficult this would be logistically! Michel Dongmo joined the team soon after the proposal was funded and got to work collecting the data we needed. However, significant logistical challenges presented themselves... for one, the butterflies didn't want to mate in the lab. It took some time but eventually Michel overcame the obstacles. We found that when comparing ecotone (variable climate and habitat) and forest (more stable climate) populations of B. dorothea, the thermal tolerance (ctmax) was higher for ecotone populations. This was true even after rearing both populations of multiple generations in the same conditions. This demonstrated that there was local adaptation and that climate change vulnerability is unlikely to be compensated for through plasticity (at least not immediately). And this conclusion then adds to the mounting evidence that tropical forest ectotherm populations may be especially vulnerable to climate change. There are a lot of things that I like about this paper. First off, it (partially) answered a question I was curious about since back in my PhD days. Second, Michel was never deterred despite a number of setbacks. It took us ten years because of the difficulty of field conditions, lack of baseline natural history, and a variety of other administrative/logistic issues. But Michel stuck to it and got it done. Finally, the review process was immensely helpful. The reviewers at Biology Open identified things we missed in the initial draft and were able to highlight the truly novel findings from the work. Thanks reviewers! We still have a ways to go regarding adaptive and plastic responses of ectotherm thermal tolerance to climate change. Keep an eye on this space. But this paper is a strong first direction in a research pathway I've been wanting to develop for some time. Not many other students were there until later. But my friend Priya Iyer was nearly always there. I would frequently stop by her office for a chat, or she would stop at mine. We would discuss all sorts of things (cultural differences, food, yesterday's seminar) and the distraction was always welcome. Her sharp insights into ecological and evolutionary theory, and her clarity in these insights, were just so impressive. The only thing that matched this was her overwhelming positivity and generosity. After we both left Stanford in 2009 (Priya was the first in our cohort to graduate) and 2010 we lost touch. But in 2018 I happened to be visiting Bangalore for a conference. I shot her an email and asked if she had time in the week I was there to meet. She let me know she would be busy because her sister was getting married. So, then she invited Marie and me to attend the wedding! It was a truly amazing experience, full of love, friendship, beauty, and phenomenal food. Because Priya was so busy with the wedding we only had a few minutes to actually meet and catch up with each other - and it was awesome. Priya passed away in Jan 2021. The Life of Science paid tribute to her recently and so clearly detailed how much Priya influenced and mentored science students in India. And indeed, we do absolutely "need more people like Priya in the sciences". I don't know what 2022 will look like but I suspect it will look a lot like 2021. COVID restrictions in Hong Kong are tightening and travel not likely, and certainly not easy. But I'm grateful to be surrounded by enthusiastic, caring, and bright students and research staff in the lab. And I'm particularly grateful for Marie and the beasts during quiet Lamma weekends. Given that the pet trade is a major threat to the survival of Asian otters (the focus of her PhD thesis), Sharne investigated and searched online for more concrete numbers. She published a small paper showing the rise of otter cafes in Japan. But the issue didn't go away. . Caroline Dingle (left in the group photo) and myself had noticed similar concerning trends all across Asia. Visiting Palawan for example in Jan 2020, troubling signs are posted at the airport warning not to buy otters (photo left). We also noticed it wasn't just otters but lots of animals were potentially affected by this trade. So, the three of us hatched a plan to collect all the data we could on the diversity within animal cafes in Asia. John Allcock joined the effort to assist with the hard work of actually collecting and interpreting the data. . We uncovered a surprising diversity of animals in the cafes, 252 mammal, bird and reptile species. And about half of those species were threatened! This suggests that exotic animal cafes could potentially be a major driver for demand of threatened species. But as we thought about it and looked into these results, we realized that we know so little in fact about how these cafes are affecting biodiversity. Many of the cafes are trying raise awareness of conservation issues (or certainly this is what they are claiming to do... and why should we think otherwise?). On the other hand, in addition to the direct demand of species driven by the cafes, we have concerns that there could be even larger indirect increases in demand with visitors being inspired to buy their own exotic animals after cafe visits. This is an issue that clearly needs further exploration. Hopefully the data and framework we presented will aid in the management of these cafes and the trade involved. Recognizing themes similar to ones in conversations I had had with Felix many times, I encouraged him to join some of the seminars and chats. The timing was good because I also began to see that Felix was developing a more active research interest in more social and philosophical angles in conservation. And we began discussing possibilities along these lines. In early 2018, the Faith and Science group had a request for proposals that compelled Felix and I to think more clearly about we could do in this area (deadlines can be great in this way). In my conservation biology course, I had been teaching about sacred groves in India for years, as a unique type of "protected area". Felix also had an interest in sacred groves. I was also thinking about India a lot because I was planning to go for the first time in the summer for the Biology of Butterflies conference. And so, we put together a proposal to study snakes and sacred groves. We were very fortunate to have received the grant and planning had begun... but the final critical piece didn't come until late in the summer of 2018, just a few months before Felix began his fieldwork! The Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation held its annual meeting in Kuching, Malaysia in July 2018. It was there that Felix saw talks by graduate students in Palatty Allesh Sinu's (from the Central University of Kerala) lab who were also doing research on sacred groves! Very rapidly we struck up a collaboration; Sinu's support and guidance was absolutely essential. Felix's field work was conducted in late 2018 with U. Prashanth Ballullaya and Ramesh Roshnath. Visiting ten sacred groves across Kerala and Karnataka and interviewing 300 people, we found that encounters with snakes in sacred groves very rarely resulted in harm coming to those snakes - while outside sacred groves such an outcome was not uncommon (23% implied that harm may come to snakes under these circumstances). In fact, the relationship between snakes, people and sacred groves is quite complex and comprises important religious, ecological, and public health considerations... snake envenomation is a major health problem. Felix's research on these topics shows the importance of considering these angles and how sacred groves feature into the story of human-snake coexistence and conservation. I was very excited to crunch some numbers and do some modeling with Francisco Bozinovi and Enrico Rezende at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile in Santiago. I was (and still am!) thinking a lot about nocturnality at the time, and in the middle of work on the topic supported by a GRF grant. My vague plan was to analyze insect thermal tolerance data. But when I arrived in Santiago, Enrico and I had long chats (sometimes exceptionally long... but always fun and enlightening) and he very quickly convinced me, somehow, to turn my attention to endothermy. Pancho (Francisco) cheerfully assisted as I dove into mammal thermal biology. In my first month in Chile I did little else but read papers and run R scripts. Much to Marie's frustration at times, I would spend all night trying to debug scripts or wrap my head around mammal ecophysiology. It was glorious! I felt like I was in grad school again, exploring ideas and trying to tackle coding problems on my own. Marie and I didnt see much of the country that first month. But we made up for it in our second month and visited some of the most incredible landscapes and wildlife I've ever seen. Our modeling results showed that warming will likely have very different consequences for nocturnal and diurnal mammals. For example, nocturnal rodents have lower thermal conductance than diurnal species. And nocturnal mammals generally tend to be smaller than diurnal mammals. These traits have important energetic consequences such that under climate change, diurnal and nocturnal species are likely to differentially experience warming impacts. For example, our projections suggest that larger small nocturnal mammals may have increased climatic suitability globally under climate change while smaller nocturnal small mammals are projected to have decreased climatic suitability. All three of the papers highlighted here began in 2018. Actually, all three of these developed very quickly relative to most of my research efforts. But still, science can be a very slow process... all the more impressive that a COVID19 vaccine was developed in under a year. Absolutely stunning and mind blowing really. We can also make these kinds of leaps in biodiversity and environmental science and I'm thus optimistic for the diversity life on our planet. We discussed a variety of issues but one fascinating topic was that of Teinpalpus aureus. He explained that there was very high demand for the species and that a lot of collecting was taking place for the international market. Over the next several years in Hong Kong I would return to the species every once in a while and consider possibilities for conservation. But it wasn't until 2016-17, with support from an HKU Seed Grant, that Tom Au and Shuang Xing stepped up to do some real work. Tom travelled all across China and Vietnam to collect distribution records of the species, which were scattered and not readily available. Pauline Dufour and Shuang also began monitoring online trade in the species. Tom, Wenda Cheng and Felix Landry Yuan then constructed species distribution models to evaluate climate change and habitat loss threats to the species. Finally, Shuang coordinated all of the individual pieces to lead the writing of the manuscript which showed how all of these threats together (habitat loss, climate change, and wildlife trade) threatened the persistence of this iconic species. We thought about a variety of different ways to get information but one source which I had not thought of was local ecological knowledge. Basically, there are fish farmers and local residents that live in the same environment as the Eurasian otter. So maybe they can provide some ideas? Turns out, despite very limited anecdotes about their distribution and ecology from ecologists, fish farmers and residents in the area know a lot about the species! Over 40% of the 211 people interviewed in the study reported positive records of otters. In addition to important details about the population's decline and distribution (both historical and contemporary), the local ecological knowledge also provided insights into how to conserve the species in the face of diverse threats in this rapidly urbanizing landscape. Toby quickly zeroed in on alien species and we wondered how urban communities might respond to introductions. We looked at this question with insects in mind first but quickly realized that there simply wasn't enough data. So we turned to birds. Ellie Dyer also joined the effort and contributed data and interpretation regarding global bird introduction histories and alien distributions. The results of Toby's analysis showed a lack of saturation in most urban bird communities when it came to alien species richness; the only exception to this came in the most urbanized environments (which can only host a limited number of species probably). In other words, most cities globally are likely to see increasing numbers of alien species establishing in the future assuming introductions continue. Thinking back to the theme above on multiple threats... again, one of the key messages here is the interaction between multiple threats to biodiversity, in this case land-use change and invasive species. But as the title of his paper (just out this month) indicates, the patterns turned out to be quite complex. Morgan helped us eventually sort out signals from all the noise and we indeed found many lower range margin shifts following increasingly extreme weather events over the past decade. This paper represents one of a handful of studies highlighting species redistribution across elevation in the Asian tropics and specifically why documenting such impacts can be complicated by diverse communities experiencing variable climatic changes. Was this true? Even if habitat is protected, rarely is it possible for habitat to remain unchanged, especially for several decades. Freda then took a significant detour in her thesis and began studying this topic. Soon after, Jonathan joined us to provide much needed guidance on stats and mountains. By looking at lots of papers on elevational species redistribution, Freda found clear interactive effects of forest loss and climate change on range shifts. The effect was particularly acute in warm tropical regions emphasizing the importance of understanding how multiple stressors, climate change and forest loss especially, will impact diversity. These changes often occur seasonally, i.e. polyphenism. What's less clear is how such polyphenism might vary across habitats. While Michel collected Bicyclus dorothea in Cameroon from ecotone/savanna and forest habitats for use in his rearing experiments (more on this next year hopefully), he also measured a range of morphological traits over two years of collection. Populations from the ecotone were more variable in eyespot size. While the climatic influence on polyphenism is well-known, this study shows how habitat gradients can further alter morphology. So do tropical butterflies tend to be darker in cooler environments? Shuang found that for tropical and subtropical ecosystems in China and Australia that the answer was yes. But what about moths? After many discussions with Roger, Louise and Aki, we decided that their moth community sampling from southwestern China could potentially address this question (and within the group our guesses as to what the answer might be was quite variable!). Shuang then set about photographing lots and lots of moths and analysing moth color across elevation. Indeed, she found a strong correlation between air temperature and the darkness of the moth assemblages, consistent with the thermal melanism hypothesis, and also consistent with UV as a potential factor in the morphology changes. Climate change effects will be filtered by the morphological traits of organisms and this study shows how nocturnal species might use such traits in unexpected ways to mediate warming impacts in the future. His attempt to lure geckos into laying eggs into strategically located PVC pipes in Hong Kong was a complete failure. He wisely changed his topic to skink thermal performance. After an early meeting with Adam and building on his previous work, Felix made his way to Cameroon and quickly made his reputation as "Atango". After extensive field and lab work in ecotone and forest sites across Cameroon in two separate field trips, he began applying mechanistic models to understand potential warming impacts on the skink, Trachylepis affinis. He also teamed up with Laurent and Matthew to map T. affinis distributions and model climate change effects on habitat suitability. Altogether he found very clear and divergent differences in how climate change might impact forest or ecotone populations of the same species of skink. The paper provides a case study for how habitat can shape physiology and potentially alter climate change vulnerability for tropical ectotherms. John ALLCOCK I've always been fascinated by wildlife - there is a story that the very first word I said was 'sparrow', while watching the birds on our neighbours roof just outside London. As I grew up, I spent a lot of my time watching birds, but also developed a strong interest in bats. By the time I started my Master's degree, I had decided that I wanted to do a PhD researching bats to find out more about these interesting but secretive animals. But life isn't always a straight line, and after graduation my career took me in a different direction, not only bringing me to Hong Kong but also leading me into ecological consultancy and then a role as manager of Mai Po Nature Reserve. Eventually I made my way to HKU, where I am finally starting that long-planned PhD, studying bats. Never give up on your dreams! Outside the university, I spend a lot of my time exploring the beautiful Hong Kong countryside, looking for birds, bats or any of the other amazing wildlife we have here. I am always keen to nurture an environmental interest among other people and I am big supporter of community science projects. My interest in ecology was sparked during my undergraduate study in HKU where I majored in Environmental Science and Geography. I am particularly interested in butterflies and other kinds of insects. I have also been active in environmental education with the hope of spreading the knowledge and joy that I gain from nature. I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Global Change and Tropical Conservation Lab, extending my PhD work in the same lab. My work focuses on the thermal ecology of subtropical butterflies and moths. Using a variety of field, experimental, and data analysis techniques, I seek to understand how these insects may respond to climate change on eco-physiological and community levels. I'm Even. My odd name comes from my Cantonese name, "Yee Man". Born and raised in Hong Kong, I've always been intrigued by the exceptionally high biodiversity in the city. Who would have thought this metropolis could nurture so much wildlife? Completing my Bachelor's degree in Ecology & Biodiversity at HKU, I've developed a keen interest in environmental education. My ambition is to utilize my training and knowledge to spread my love and passion for nature to the public and especially to students, the future of our society. I have helped in various NGOs with ecotours and was one of the coordinators of the local environmental education programme, Take Action! 2021. It was a really enjoyable experience. Research-wise, I've always wanted to conduct applied research in conservation biology, striving to protect biodiversity. I'm generally interested in all sorts of wildlife, but my favourite is plants. Plants are quiet and graceful, always sitting there subtly supporting other members of the ecosystem, by providing shelter, food and oxygen.
